Snow shoe trekking – Pieni Karhunkierros, Oulanka, Finland | Haustiergadgets
Snowshoe trekking on the Pieni Karhunkierros Trail (Little Bear’s Trail 12 km) in Oulanka National Park, on the border of Kuusamo and Salla. We took the trail in March, the weather and scenery were great, and it was very quiet.
We were told that it is better to do the trail counterclockwise if you’re using snowshoes. This way you don’t have to walk down the steep snow covered steps at Kallioportti. We somehow managed to do the trail in the opposite direction (clockwise), and yes the steps were tough, especially on the icy parts.
These are the main parts of the trail:
– Myllykoski mill
– Niskakoski hanging bridge, across the river Kitkajoki
– Lookout point of Kallioportti
– Kalliosaari island
– Siilastupa open wilderness hut
– Frozen waterfall of Jyrävä
– Aallokkokoski rapids
Starting / end point Basecamp Oulanka:
The legendary Karhunkierros Trail (Bear’s Trail 80 km) follows the route of the Pieni Karhunkierros Trail.
